Direct Access is now legal in California

“On October 7th 2013 Governor Brown signed AB 1000 into law enabling Californians to directly access physical therapist services." Effective January 1st 2014 Californians can now seek relief from pain and injuries that effect their ability to function by seeing a physical therapist directly without needing a physician referral.

FAQ’s:

Are there restrictions under this direct access law?

Yes. Individuals directly accessing a physical therapist will be limited to 45 calendar days or 12 visits before having to be seen by a physician.

What does this actually mean for our patients?

It means if you need physical therapy treatment you no longer need to see a physician to get a referral to start treatment. You can come into the clinic directly and be evaluated by one of our highly trained physical therapists.  You can then receive 12 treatments within 45 calendar days whichever comes sooner.

At the initial evaluation, if the therapist feels your condition warrants further evaluation or diagnostic testing by a physician and is not appropriate for PT you will be referred for these services.

If after 12 visits you continue to have symptoms and have not made sufficient progress we will refer you to your physician. At this stage in order to continue with physical therapy we would need a doctor’s referral.

If after 12 visits (or less) you have met your goals and no longer require treatment you will be discharged from our care.

Will my doctor be informed I am receiving physical therapy treatment?

If you would like us to inform them we will maintain close communication with your doctor by contacting his/her office by phone and sending him/her a written report of your initial evaluation. Your physician may prefer you follow up with his/her office before you continue with treatment and will notify our office to communicate this.

Will my insurance pay for physical therapy if I don’t have a prescription?

United Health Care, Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna are currently paying for physical therapy services under the new direct access guidelines.  Certain policies within Blue Cross still require a prescription to pay for physical therapy services.  We will call your insurance and determine for you the status of your particular policy prior to treatment.

What does this means for our Medicare patients?

This new law allows you to come in to see a physical therapist for treatment without needing to see a doctor first HOWEVER in order for Medicare to pay for these services a doctor needs to sign our evaluation agreeing to the plan of care we have developed for you.   Therefore, Bartley Physical Therapy strongly recommends our Medicare patients see a doctor for a referral before coming in to see us. This will ensure the Medicare guidelines are followed appropriately and will guarantee payment within the current benefit limits.

What if I want to come in and pay cash?

Yes, you can now come into our clinic and be seen by our physical therapists without needing a doctor’s referral. However, per the law you can only receive 12 visits within 45 calendar days whichever comes first without a prescription from the doctor.  At this time if you need more treatment you will need a doctor’s referral to continue treatment.
